eBook: A clear manual on how income tax works in practice

Read about the thinking behind the eBook Students, work and TAXES – How does it work?, what we achieved, and what our collaboration with Jake&James Accounting brings.

Brief

The internet is missing content that explains to a student how income tax applies to their specific situation – a DPP or DPČ agreement, a full-time contract, a trade licence, or any combination of those. We wanted to fill that gap with an eBook that is expert-reviewed and genuinely usable. Our long-term partner Jake&James Accounting took on the expert review, and the copywriters from Pretty Much Nomads helped with the writing.

We delivered

  • income tax ebook
  • expert guarantor
  • communication partnership
  • social media
  • blog
  • newsletter

Results

The first wave of communication brought more than 200 downloads of the eBook. It keeps spreading after the download too – parents, HR managers and other payroll and accounting firms pass it around. Thanks to the expert review, the eBook did not become just another source among many; it became the reference on the topic – and so did Jake&James Accounting.

Income tax – theory is one thing, practice another

Students often have several incomes at once and across the year. But they can sign the taxpayer declaration – the 'pink form' – with only one employer, and once the tax return comes around… good luck making sense of it. 😵‍💫 And what if they also work on a trade licence? Or hold a full-time contract plus a side job – while still studying?

Plenty of scenarios. So we wrote an eBook that helps readers find their bearings in their own situation and tax duties, however complicated they are. 🤘🏼

What the collaboration with Jake&James Accounting brings

  • Spreading the know-how of expert guarantor Jake&James – the downloaded eBook gets passed around not only by students, but also by their parents and by accountants in companies. HR departments use it as a manual for their student employees.
  • Other payroll and accounting firms use the eBook as well – Jake&James Accounting owns the topic.
  • Joint communication and visibility online raises awareness of Jake&James.

Mission 1.0 – do it better than everyone else combined

There are plenty of articles online about income tax for side jobs and sole traders. Even AI will spit out an overview for you. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Piles of complicated (or meaningless) rules, numbers and legal terms – and yet you stay on the surface. The added value, working out where you stand yourself, is missing.

👉🏼 That is exactly where the gap on the internet was (yes, was 🤨) – and for us, a chance to fill it with valuable, expert-verified content.

So we approached our long-term partner Jake&James Accounting and asked them to supervise the text as experts. The ambition was big: write an eBook that takes the pain away. Not just for students, but for everyone who helps them handle income tax – parents, teachers, and employers too.

Income tax is a complex, complicated topic. Even so, its essence can be explained clearly and understandably. Real examples beat mere words and heaps of dead facts – the motto we kept reminding ourselves of throughout the work on the eBook.

Before I started writing the eBook, I worked out several personas with specific situations, for example “a student working on several agreements at once” or “a full-time contract alongside a trade licence while studying”. I asked myself – what do these personas need to learn so they understand how income tax works in their case? And what do they need to take care of so they don't break the law and still meet their tax obligations? That is how the skeleton of the eBook came about.

Practice first. Yes, it works for taxes too 🤓

The whole eBook is built around 3 students. We use their situations to describe how income tax plays out for them. For each of them we also build hypothetical scenarios – what would happen if they added a DPČ agreement to a DPP with the same employer? Or started working somewhere else as well? That way we covered the full complexity of the topic without losing clarity.

Alongside our characters' stories and situations we add chapters that round the topic out. Above all, working full-time while studying – can I hold a trade licence at the same time, or work on an agreement? We also explain how the basic taxpayer credit works, or advance payments and the flat-rate tax.

The result is an eBook that works as a compass and a guide. Thanks to it, students:

  • 🗺️ easily understand their own situation – how income tax applies to them and why;
  • 🧭 know their rights and obligations and how they can decide.

The brilliant copywriters from Pretty Much Nomads helped us enormously with the writing. ✨ Above all Monika Hušková. Thank you!

Monika – has a DPP and a DPČ agreement with 2 employers

  • Where should she sign the pink form, and why?
  • What would happen if she went over the limit with one employer – and had to pay social and health insurance?
  • What taxpayer credit is she entitled to, and what if she cannot use all of it?

Patrik – works on a DPČ agreement for one employer

  • What would happen if he worked more hours than the law allows?
  • Can he take on another DPČ agreement with a different employer?
  • If he signed a DPP with the same employer, do those hours add up with the hours worked on the DPČ?

Táňa – studies and has a trade licence

  • How do advance payments work while she is studying, and when are they due?
  • What if she exceeds the decisive amount?
  • Besides working on her trade licence, can she also work on a DPP or DPČ agreement?

A statement from Jake&James Accounting

Financial education for young people matters a great deal, and we like what Nekrachni does and how they do it. That is why we support their work. Besides communicating together on social media, we got involved in preparing an eBook that had been missing for a long time. We are not the only ones happy with the result – so are our clients and hundreds of students. It helps everyone find their way around income tax.

Mission 2.0 – get the eBook to as many people as possible

While writing it – which also involved several rounds of expert review, because we ventured into fairly uncharted waters – we were preparing the eBook's promotion in parallel. We went at it with newsletters, social media posts and paid advertising.

💣 The results are a blast – the first wave of communication brought more than 200 downloads of the eBook. We also have feedback that it spreads after the download – parents or HR managers forward it on. Like a diffuser. Without the expert review from Jake&James we would have become just another source among many. We went further – and that is why the eBook became the reference on the topic.

The eBook is part of a long-term communication partnership

We focus on informing and raising awareness – that advance payments are changing, say, or that it is time to file a tax return (and how to do it). We also explain how to run a trade licence safely, or how not to get pulled into disguised employment. All of that on social media and on our blog.

A few articles created together with Jake&James:

  • You, your employer and your payslip – who taxes what, and how
  • You and your side job – when to work on an agreement and when on a trade licence?

A statement from Jake&James Accounting

Financial literacy is one of the essential pillars of a successful future for our country, so we are glad we can take part in building it. And of course we are also glad that the collaboration runs in such a friendly, pleasant spirit. 😊
